Polo – Finally!

Posted on: January 19th, 2015 by Claudia

The weather, the holidays and acts of idiots be damned – polo is back!

It may have been pouring down rain on Saturday but that didn’t dampen the spirits of Cameron Liberio, Bob Grant and James Daugherty for their first polo lesson of 2015. All three started polo last year but hadn’t played since the fall.

Everyone got re-acquainted with wrapping legs and tying tails before mounting up for a review of polo position and mallet strokes on the offside and the nearside, forehand and backhand.

That done, it was on to the main lesson, a two-on-two scrimmage with the… Continue reading

Polo 101

Posted on: August 26th, 2014 by Claudia

Day broke in blazing sunshine for the July clinic at Polo Zealot School. Karla Tripoli, Susie Heuscher and Leslie Quinto came out to give polo a try. Karla has been trying to find time to take a clinic for months. The date and her schedule finally meshed. Susie has seen a lot of polo from her pottery booth at our tournaments and decided to take the plunge. NW polo players are familiar with her horse-themed trophies at Tacoma Polo Club matches. Leslie is new to the Roy area. The clinic is a great way for her to… Continue reading

Daily Doings

It was a capacity crowd at Tacoma Polo Club July 4th weekend. Every paddock and pen was filled with ponies for the Independence Cup. Twelve teams competed in two days of terrific polo. Thanks to all who came and all who worked to get the place ready. It wouldn’t happen without you. Andrew Towell photographed all the action with his usual excellence. Click here for a link to his photographs. On the heels of the Independence Cup, Polo Zealot School holds an introductory polo clinic this Saturday, July 19 at 10 a.m. Click here for

First String Polo Ponies

Posted on: June 26th, 2013 by Claudia

Tim Kelley is starting the 2013 outdoor season at Tacoma Polo Club with two, count’em, two polo ponies. Fanta and Fluffy will carry him to goals and ride-offs and fantastic penalty shots.

When Tim started polo lessons in late 2011, it had been years since he’d been on a horse. He’d ridden as a child and watched polo games at Lake Oswego Hunt Club. Life intervened but he never forgot the fun he’d had riding and always wanted to learn polo.

An internet search brought him to Tacoma Polo Club and lessons at… Continue reading

Spring Spa

Posted on: April 28th, 2013 by Claudia

The ponies had a spa day this week, getting all gussied up for the coming season.

First step – teeth. Dentist Dave Klugh, Equine Dental Associates, set up and went to work. Fanta is missing a tooth in her top jaw. With nothing to grind against, the opposing tooth kept growing and filled the space. That made it difficult for her to chew efficiently. She gets special thin-stemmed orchard grass that is easier for her old molars to grind. (She also slobbers a lot but that’s another story).

Dr. Klugh inserted the mouth speculum

Polo: Fun for all ages

Posted on: September 14th, 2012 by Claudia

August’s intro clinic was loads of fun. We ran the gamut in age and riding experience. Our youngest participant, Daniel, is just 8 years old. He rode Fluffy and hit the ball like a veteran. He was accompanied by his dad Winston and five other newbies.

There is no typical clinic attendee. Some like Jeff, played polo in college. Others, like Winston, hadn’t been on a horse before. Kudos to him for giving it a try.

The people who have ridden before come from different disciplines. Rachel rides western. Michelle… Continue reading
